Pricing in Europe vs United States

Private jet pricing in Europe and the US might look similar on the surface, but they are driven by very different "invisible" costs.

Private jet pricing in Europe and the US might look similar on the surface, but they are driven by very different "invisible" costs. As of 2026, the gap has widened due to aggressive new environmental taxes in Europe and unique tax incentives in the US.

Here is how the two markets differ in terms of your final invoice:

The biggest difference in 2026 is how much you pay the government before the engines even start.

Europe (The Carbon Cost): Europe has pivoted heavily toward "polluter pays" models.

UK Air Passenger Duty (APD): As of April 1, 2026, the "Higher Rate" for private jets over 20 tonnes has surged. For a long-haul flight (over 5,500 miles), you’ll see a tax of £1,141 per passenger.

French Solidarity Tax (TSBA): France charges a tiered tax ranging from €420 to €2,100 per passenger depending on the distance.

EU Fuel Mandates: All fuel uplifted in the EU must now contain at least 2% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Since SAF is significantly more expensive than standard Jet A-1, these costs are passed directly to you.

USA (The Federal Excise Tax): The US keeps it simpler.

FET: You pay a flat 7.5% Federal Excise Tax on domestic flight legs.

2. Airport Fees and Infrastructure

The US "FBO" Network: The US has over 4,000 airports capable of handling private jets. Competition between private terminals (FBOs) is fierce, often leading to lower landing fees or waived fees if you "uplift" a certain amount of fuel.

The European "Handling" Model: European airports like Nice (NCE) or Geneva (GVA) are heavily congested. Slot coordination is mandatory, and "VIP Handling" is often a monopoly at smaller airports, leading to mandatory handling fees that can add €1,000 upwards  to a trip that might cost half that in a mid-sized US city.

3. Hourly Rate Comparison (2026 Estimates)

Because of lower fuel taxes and higher aircraft utilisation, flying the same jet in the US is typically 15% to 25% cheaper per hour than in Europe.

4. Seasonal Volatility

Europe is "Peak-Heavy": European pricing is extremely seasonal. In July and August, demand for the Mediterranean (Ibiza, Mykonos, Nice) is so high that "standard" rates vanish, and you may pay a 30% premium just to secure a tail.

The US is "Event-Heavy": US pricing is more stable year-round but spikes violently around specific events (The Super Bowl, Art Basel Miami, or the Masters), where airport "parking fees" can jump from $200 to $5,000 per night.
